Scratchboard is an old art form used for graphic records prior to photography being invented. The paper was created in England and was originally known as scraperboard. The paper is specially treated with bone china and then covered with a litho ink. Then with a sharp pin or point you scratch through the black into the china surface. Once the layer of ink is scratched away there is no way to put it back, you have to start all over. There is no pre sketching on this type of medium because it is easily chipped, scratched or broken.
Customers may prefer this medium because of its high detail and sharp contrasts. In some cases I will even add a touch of color for accent. This entails a process done carefully as not to bleed onto the coated surface.
My purpose in reviving the use of scratchboard is to expose people to this rare art form; that they will enjoy and appreciate it. I chose wildlife as my main study in scratchboard, to revitalize their appreciation and also highlight animals who are threatened by extinction. Each rendering becomes one of my favorites because of the challenge of bringing something to life through this delicate medium.
